Why Military Veterans Are At Risk For Mesothelioma And Asbestosis

Most workers have heard of the complications that arise from exposure to asbestos. The fibrous compound was used in a myriad of applications up until the 1980s, and few companies warned employees about the dangers of exposure. But as is now widely known, exposure to asbestos can lead to malignant mesothelioma, also known as asbestos cancer.

Anyone who worked in construction, maintenance, or custodial fields when asbestos was in use could have been exposed. But new research has shown that military veterans are at a particularly high risk for malignant mesothelioma, particularly Navy seamen and technicians who worked with asbestos parts on ships. This article will examine that risk, the possible results, and how an experienced mesothelioma attorney can help with recovery of damages.

Exposure To Asbestos

Asbestos was originally used because it helped add strength to compounds. It was commonly found in a variety of construction supplies, including drywall, plaster, caulking and putty, joint compounds, insulation, and fireproofing materials. Whenever any of these construction materials were installed, handled, sanded, or removed, the asbestos fibers were knocked out into the air. The fine asbestos dust was easy to inhale, and often ended up remaining in the air even after the actual work had been performed. This allowed it to be inhaled by others who may not have been immediately involved with the project that kicked up the dust initially. Cleanup crews, inspection crews and others often inhaled the fibers accidentally without ever knowing that they were in danger.

On a ship, the danger of exposure to asbestos was even greater. The enclosed spaces made it more likely that fibers would be inhaled. In the open air, asbestos eventually dissipates even though it tends to remain airborne for quite some time. On a boat, there is limited ability for the fibers to blow away naturally. Instead, they circulate and expose more people to the harmful effects of the dust, greatly increasing the risk of asbestos cancer.

Extended Risk From Indirect Exposure

If you were in a situation where you may have worked with asbestos yourself, you should certainly get screened for asbestos cancer. But you may be at risk for malignant mesothelioma if you were in the vicinity of asbestos fibers and inhaled them unintentionally. You may even have the disease if a family member worked with asbestos; the fibers tend to cling to clothing, creating the possibility that they would dislodge at home, after the workday was over and outside the environment that caused the original contamination.

Exposure Leads To Malignant Mesothelioma

When workers inhaled the fibers, they rarely knew that the fibers could cause potentially deadly health hazards like malignant mesothelioma. However, most companies that manufactured construction products containing asbestos were aware of the fact that when it was inhaled, it could eventually lead to deadly asbestos cancer. The asbestos fibers agitate the mesothelium, which are mucus membranes that line almost every organ in the human body. Malignant mesothelioma is usually found in the mesothelium around the lungs, but it can also be found around the heart and even surrounding the stomach.

What makes asbestos cancer so dangerous is how easily it can spread throughout the body. It begins as small tumors within the mesothelium, but tends to quickly metastasize into other nearby tissues. Because most malignant mesothelioma is found around the lungs, the cancer tends to become lung cancer. Although the two are linked, asbestos cancer is not the same as lung cancer: malignant mesothelioma may spread and become lung cancer, but it always begins in the mesothelium and it is always caused by asbestos exposure.

Do You Need A Mesothelioma Attorney?

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, you should strongly consider hiring an experienced mesothelioma attorney. Although the use of asbestos was banned decades ago, asbestos cancer can take many years to manifest. In fact, many cases are going to court just recently. This rise in cases has led to specialized mesothelioma attorneys, who are familiar with the law and the science behind asbestos cancer.

No matter how advanced your disease, a mesothelioma attorney can be a very beneficial partner throughout the process. He or she will be able to guide you through the complex legal issues of proving fault, and he or she will be able to assist your family during the late stages of the disease. You need a mesothelioma attorney you can trust, but once you find the right one, you’ll be able to rest assured that your rights are being defended as well as possible.

High Levels Of Uric Acid In The Blood

High levels of uric acid in the blood are as dangerous as high levels of blood cholesterol. The public does not seem to be much aware of the risk involved. A high level of blood uric acid is a pushing factor in causing coronary artery disease, like high levels of blood cholesterol.

High levels of uric acid should be detected as early as possible, especially in persons who are prone to coronary artery disease/heart attack, or have a family history of heart attack or even stroke. The estimation should be done more frequently if the patient is addicted to alcohol, or mainly takes a non-vegetarian diet. In all cases of stone, either in the gallbladder or in the urinary tract, uric acid must be tested. The testing of blood uric acid is highly valuable in cases of problems of the joints, backaches and even in cases of vague aches and pains. If this test is ignored and high levels of blood uric acid are not taken note of, the patient will continue to suffer from backache or vague aches/pains, and moreover, various other complications of high blood uric acid may also appear in due course.

Uric acid is one of the constituents of the blood. Its normal levels are 2 – 6 mg/ dl.

Uric acid mainly comes from non-vegetarian food or its products, like soups, etc. It also comes from caffeine present in tea or coffee. Therefore, when a person takes either meat or teal coffee, he adds to the uric acid in the blood. Other beverages like alcohol, beer, wine, etc. also contribute to the levels of uric acid in the blood.

Besides food, uric acid is also added to the blood from various tissue breakdowns in the body. To some extent, the body also releases its own uric acid.

Normal range of blood uric acid

Normally, excess of uric acid in the blood is excreted by the kidneys, and in this way a normal range of uric acid is maintained. The wide normal variation of uric acid, i.e. from 2 to 6 mg/ dl, is due to the fact that certain factors influence the blood uric acid levels in a person. It differs from race to race. The level is usually lower during pregnancy, and it increases after vigorous activity / exercise. However, if a person has some complications as a result of high levels of uric acid, even an upper normal level of blood uric acid may be considered high in such cases.

High levels of blood uric acid may playa vital role in causing coronary artery disease. It is a dangerous complication caused by a high level of uric acid. A high level of uric acid is likely to damage the blood vessel walls and urate crystals may get deposited in these walls, leading to a narrowing of the blood vessels causing coronary artery disease.

Another debilitating complication of high blood uric acid is that it may cause painful swelling of the joints, i.e. arthritis, especially gout. In gout, there is a recurrent attack of acute pain and swelling, involving at first only the big toe, and then several joints may be affected and the patient may even be crippled, if the disease is not arrested/treated/prevented in time. The exact cause of high blood uric acid in gout is not known. The heredity factor in such cases cannot be ruled out.

As already said, vague aches/pains or backaches may be the result of high blood uric acid.

In addition to the above, kidneys may also be involved due to constant elevated levels of uric acid in the blood. Since uric acid is excreted by the kidneys, and the excretion is much more if the levels are high in a person, the kidneys may be damaged as a result of excess excretion of uric acid through them. There may be a crystallization in the kidneys leading to uric acid stone, and if the excretion continues to be excessive, the kidneys may even be damaged markedly, requiring more drastic measures to maintain normal kidney functions. However, if high blood uric acid is detected and treated early, kidney damage may be reversed. Hence there is a vital need to detect high levels of uric acid well in time.

Even gallstones (cholelithiasis) are likely to form as a result of high levels of blood uric acid. Gallstones may cause infection in the gallbladder (cholecystitis). It is well known that both cholelithiasis and cholecystitis can lead to cancer of the gallbladder. It is, therefore, advisable that the gallbladder should be removed surgically in all cases of cholelithiasis (gallstones either as a result of high blood uric acid or due to some other reasons) or cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder due to any cause), to prevent the cancer of the gallbladder. Early detection of high blood uric acid helps prevent gallbladder stones/infection, and finally cancer of the gallbladder.

Essential Facts Related to Tongkat Ali Extract

A lot of countries in Asia have been using tongkat ali extract for many years now. It provides certain medicinal purposes, especially for its anti-bacterial properties and ability to help in treating malaria. But perhaps it’s the supplement’s ability to help out with enhancing the male’s sexual performance is the most sought-after benefit.

A trip to an all-natural health and food store will tell you just how popular it is today. It’s one of the most commonly used ingredients in many preparations that claim to improve the male libido. Additionally, it’s known to help give energy boost. Alone, it’s commonly available in liquid, powder or capsule form. However, it may also be combined with other ingredients to improve its effects.

This supplement is also beneficial for treating erectile dysfunction, which is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain penile erection. It’s been used by men in Malaysia and other Asian countries for this problem. Because of this, this root extract of the tree has been touted as the “Asian Viagra”. What’s more, males suffering from infertility may also take it as studies have shown that it also helps increase sperm count.

What makes all of these possible is because of the supplement’s ability to boost the testosterone levels of the body. A male hormone, testosterone is a role player especially in the stage of puberty for the secondary sex characteristics’ development. For an adult, it regulates libido and sexual performance. While it’s naturally produced by the testicles, some of it is also present in the body of females.

The hormone is also responsible for a lot of things aside from those mentioned above. It also plays a role in the regulation of mood, energy, metabolism and the sperm’s maturation. Additionally, it helps in the increasing strength and muscle mass. It’s for these reasons why many athletes and body builders use this supplement to enhance testosterone levels in their bodies, thus speeding up recovery and boosting performance.

But just because it can be considered as all-natural doesn’t mean it has no side effects. Commonly observed ones, especially with excessive usage, include anxiety, insomnia, restlessness and even fever. Children, pregnant women and those with heart diseases, kidney problems, liver damage and prostate cancer should also refrain from taking this supplement.

Tongkat ali extract is derived from a tree with the same name. It also goes by the name of eurycoma longifolia. While every part of the tree can be used for certain medicinal applications, the roots provide the most potency. Make sure that you read the packaging thoroughly and follow the directions according to the manufacturer.

Herbal Remedies For Vaginal Infection And Less Lubrication

Vaginal dryness or less lubrication is unfortunately a very common part of transition into menopause in women. Reports state that about 40 to 60 percent of women experience this symptom at some point during the transition period to menopause. Reports further add that women are not informed or they are embarrassed to ask about this less lubrication issue. However, it is suggested that they should keep themselves informed about this normal symptom of menopause, so that they can look for a solution and can improve their physical and emotional health.

Not only women during their menopause period, some women also experience this issue due to vaginal infection. This is where they are recommended to rely on herbal remedies for vaginal infection and dryness to get a safe relief. Before actually getting into the details about the herbal remedy, it is better to understand the causes behind less lubrication:

Causes of vaginal dryness:

Generally, the walls of genital passage in women stay lubricated with a thin layer of clear fluid. This fluid level is maintained by estrogen and it will also help in keeping the lining of genital passage in a healthy fashion and will help in maintaining elasticity and thickness as well. During menopause, there will be a drop in the estrogen level, which in turn brings down the level of moisture, thereby making the genital passage less elastic and thinner. This condition is referred medically as vaginal atrophy. Here are the other reasons for a drop in estrogen level in women, thereby leading to lesser lubrication:

1. Breastfeeding and childbirth

2. Medications used for treating endometriosis and uterine fibroids

3. Surgical removal of ovaries

4. Chemotherapy or other type of treatment like radiation for cancer

5. Douching

6. Certain antidepressants and medications taken for cold and allergy

7. Insufficient foreplay during lovemaking.

Regardless of the reason behind this condition, the lesser lubrication issue can lead to pain during lovemaking, burning and itching sensation as well. Now, let us get into the details about safe herbal remedies for vaginal infection:

Herbal remedy:

When talking about safe herbal remedy for vaginal infection and lesser lubrication, Vg-3 tablets can provide the best remedy to women and the reason for its effectiveness is the ingredients present in these capsules and here are the details in this regard:

Juhi: Juhi is an ingredient that has a long history of treating a wide range of health issues. The juice of this herb can promote healing of wounds and it will also help in early gaining of tensile strength, thereby helping in tightening of genital wall muscles.

Suhaga: This ingredient is known for its antiviral, anti-fungal and good antiseptic properties, thereby helping in prevention of vaginal infection in women. This is a natural occurring mineral that is mined from dried salt.

Gulab: This is nothing, but the rose petal and it is known for its effectiveness in improving the flow of blood to genital passage, thereby helping in improving lubrication.

So, Vg-3 tablets are the best remedies for vaginal infection to provide the best relief for women.

The ABCs of Healthy Fruits (Part One)

All fruits are healthy to the human body in specific ways. A combination of fruits in your diet can help to keep you healthy, and cure certain diseases as well. There is a huge variety of fruits that can help you, including apples, apricots, bananas, blueberries, cantaloupe, cranberries, figs, grapefruit, grapes, kiwi fruit, lemon/limes and oranges. Other healing fruits include papaya, pears, pineapple, plums, prunes, raisins, raspberries, strawberries and watermelon. Here we take a look at a variety of the healing properties of a selection of fruits.

Amaranth is a food that not everyone is familiar with. While technically a fruit, amaranth is commonly used as a type of grain that is found in many different types of breads, muffins, pasta and other foods that are as an adjunct to flour. The seeds of amaranth are extremely high in protein that builds muscle. Amaranth is much richer in protein than most grains. Amaranth seeds are also excellent at building up the immune system because they are high in zinc, copper and magnesium.

Apricots are excellent antioxidants. They are chock-full of vitamin C and beta-carotene. Research studies have yielded the fact that beta carotene is beneficial at protecting the body against lung cancer. Apricots are great sources of fiber. Apricots are more nutritious if you buy them fresh as opposed to canned.

Bananas are full of potassium, and therefore great at reducing blood pressure. Bananas are full of vitamin B6, which is good for encouraging the strength of the immune system. Bananas are particularly good to start off the day. Eat a banana with a glass of low fat milk and a piece of whole wheat bread (or toast) with peanut butter for breakfast and it will give you plenty of energy. For a change of pace whip up a banana shake in the blender and drink your start to a good day!

Cantaloupe is full of plenty of vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, vitamin B6, folate, potassium and fiber. Research studies have shown that beta-carotene is particularly helpful at fighting cancers that originate in the lungs but more recent studies have shown that it is also worthwhile for fighting other types of cancers such as cancer of the cervix, uterine cancer, stomach cancer and oral forms of cancers. Evidence also supports that vitamin C decreases the incidence of mouth cancers, throat cancers, pancreatic cancer and stomach cancer.

Figs are beneficial to health and that is the case regardless of whether you choose to eat figs fresh or in their dried form. Figs have plenty of vitamin C, fiber, magnesium and potassium in them. Figs contain a type of fruit fiber that is able to decrease blood pressure, and in particular, systolic blood pressure, which is the top number of the blood pressure reading which in turn, calculates the pressure of the contractions of the heart. Fiber in general is connected to decreasing the bottom number of the blood pressure equation, which is the diastolic blood pressure. The diastolic blood pressure stands for the pressure of the heart when it is resting between its contracting action.

Chemicals And Cancer

Chemicals And Cancer.

One of the most obvious; yet avoided, ways to avoid cancer throughout your lifetime is simply to never start smoking or quit if you are. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer due to the tar and other various, unhealthy chemicals that are packed in tightly. Quitting may seem hard, but it is never as hard as dealing with cancer.

Limit the amount of red meats, and especially processed meats, in your diet. A healthy diet is linked to reduced risks of cancer. Eating a heavy amount of red, processed meats will increase the fat content of your diet. The processing in particular exposes you to some potentially harmful chemicals and preservatives. All of these things can be high risk factors for cancer.

If you have cancer, or want to prevent it, throw out anything you use that contains chemicals. There are chemicals in well-known carcinogens such as asbestos that can contribute to the formation of cancers, but many household cleansers, laundry soaps, even deodorants contain chemicals. Visit a local health food store for alternatives to these harmful products.

To help reduce the risk of cancer, use a filter on your kitchen faucet. There are a variety of cancer-causing chemicals in tap water, including arsenic and chromium. A filter drastically cuts down on these contaminants and may even encourage you to drink more water, which has a number of other benefits for your health.

If you wear makeup, use products that do not contain chemicals that have been linked to cancer. There are websites online that can help you look up your favorite products to see what they have in them. Avoid products that contain ingredients with “peg” or “eth” as part of their name.

A great way of avoiding cancer is, DO NOT SMOKE! At least three in every ten cancer deaths is linked to smoking as cigarettes are filled with poisons and chemicals that you inhale with every drag. Quitting is not easy but your body will thank you daily for doing so.

If you have been exposed to any type of asbestos, dangerous chemicals in paint, or other types of dangerous substances through your job or home, you should be visiting the doctor at least once per year to receive check-ups and cancer screenings. Work to catch the disease in time if you have been exposed to dangerous substances.

In order to reduce the risk of getting cancer, follow this tip. Stain and grease proofing chemicals, such as the ones found in scotch guard and food packaging, contains many unhealthy carcinogens. These carcinogens are passed to food items when contact is made and enter the body through digestion. They also enter the skin when it touches scotch guarded fabric. Avoid these products at all costs.

Your skin is where you meet the environment. Simple hand washing can protect you against many bacteria and cancer-causing chemicals. When traveling or at work, you can bring wipes with you to clean your hands. They can also be used to clean the keyboard you are using, headphones or other equipment.

In order to prevent it is important to not expose yourself to certain household cleaning products. It has been proven that these products contain endocrine disrupting chemicals, which can cause certain cancers, particularly breast cancer. If you have to use these products, try to wear a facial mask when using them.

Here is one of the most important tips for cancer prevention in existence. Avoid BPA at all costs. BPA, also known as Bisphenol A, is a synthetic estrogen. It is found in hard plastics such as those that are used for water bottles and the interior of canned foods. BPA has been linked to cancer in many cases. In order to avoid BPA, use products that do not contain it.

Be mindful of your exposure to BPA. This synthetic estrogen is often found in canned goods, water bottles and other items. Research has shown that BPA has the potential to cause cancer, so try to eat more frozen foods and look for water bottles that are labeled as BPA free.

Having cancer will most certainly feel like the end of the world at times, but it definitely doesn’t have to be. Using the tips you’ve just read in this “Chemicals” article to act as your guide, you will be able to explore many options and remain positive about your plight, as you push toward beating this disease.

Female Infertility: The Causes

Female infertility is the result of various factors that affect a woman’s body. This article tries to enumerate them and explain them to you.

The inability of the woman to conceive and give birth to a baby is known as Female infertility. This can happen due to several factors like:

 Age as a general factor: The downward spiral of female fertility begins from 27. At 35 she approaches toward infertility. And rate of success of becoming pregnant goes down from 3% to 5% post 30. At 50 menopause occurs and this puts a full stop to the dreams and aspirations of becoming a mother.

Genetic causes – Androgen insensitivity syndrome and such other related genetic problems can cause female infertility,

Hypothalamic- pituitary factors that include Hypothalamic Amenorrhea Hypothalamic Amenorrhea. On account of some measure of disturbance in the thyroid gland and the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal system, both of which regulate the process of reproduction in the females, the process of menstruation remains absent.

 One of the ovarian factors like Polycystic ovary syndrome affects the production of FSH or follicle-stimulating hormone. Consequently, the production and development of egg or ovum faces with a deadlock causing infertility. Other disorders are Anovulation and Diminished Ovarian Reserve. Innately women have a definite egg or oocyte reserve, which depletes as age advances. Also, the condition of oocytes degenerates.

Other major ovary related factors include: Premature Menopause (when the follicles start to disappear well before a lady reaches her menopausal age), Diminished Ovarian Reserve (that can come about with time), Menopause (which marks the end of her child-bearing years), and Luteal Phase Defect or Luteal Dysfunction (where female infertility can occur due to a disability of the female eggs to get implanted). Female infertility can also be brought about by Ovarian Cancer. Gonadal dysgenesis is another probable scenario where the LH (lutienizing hormone) and the FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) are secreted in very low amounts. Hence the functional ovaries do not undergo the required development, and infertility results,

 Tubal or ectopic peritoneal factor – The formation of endometrial cells outside the womb, apart from being inside the uterine cavity, gives rise to Endometriosis. Female hormones affect these cells boith inside and outside the cavity. With time the condition worsens and the woman is doomed with infertility. In fact one of the common reasons of sterility is endometriosis. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, constituting bacterial infections, attacks the female pelvic zone comprising reproductive organs, appendix and part of the intestine. Serious disorders like the obstruction of the fallopian tubes also happen. Resultantly, eggs fail to reach out to the uterus. This state is termed as Salpingitis and renders a woman barren. Pelvic Tuberculosis is another heinous form of PID, which has a stark effect on the capacity to be pregnant.

Causes related to the uterus – The female uterus can have fibroids (with some of them just below the uterine cavity lining areas). Known as submucosal uterine fibroids, these can cause heavy flow of blood during menstruation. Uterine fibroids can also lead to frequent miscarriages and female infertility, and

 Cervical Stenosis and Non-receptive cervical mucus are some of the cervical factors responsible for female infertility. Certain factors like the low production of cervical mucus or its inability to facilitate the movement of the sperms to enter uterus, cervical narrowing (Stenosis) deteriorate the condition. Cervical infections because of Sexually Transmitted Diseases like Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma hominis, Trichomonas, ureaplasma urealyticum cause sterility too. Even sperm allergy is a viable reason.

Female infertility is thus caused as a result of an array of factors. However, traditional medications fail to point out the actual reasons. Rather they end up with pocket-crunching and complex techniques like IVF and ICSI, which might not be fruitful. Trying out-of-the-box approaches like the holistic remedies look to hook the real causes and then apply effective treatment. Chinese medications, herbs, exercise, diet, acupuncture and changes in the lifestyle are some of the forms of holistic principles that cure infertility.

How To Have A Healthy Life

Health, as defined in the World Health Organization (WHO) constitution: Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

The definition was updated in the 1986 WHO “Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion” to say health is a “resource for everyday life, not the objective of
living”, and “health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.”

1. Sleep: more sleep is not necessarily better. Recommend sleep hours are different for individuals at different age. Recommended sleeping hours reduce as you get older. Too much sleep, or not enough of it can actually kill a person. A British Study suggests that getting less then 6 hours of sleep a night, and getting more then 8 hours of sleep a night, doubles a persons risk of an early death from any cause. Adults should aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night.

2. Vitamin B12: comes naturally only from animal sources, so vegans should look for fortified breakfast cereals, fortified soy beverages, veggie meats, or Vitamin B12 supplement.

3. Thyroid: Even a mildly underactive thyroid can increase individuals chances of getting heart disease by 65 percent. A blood test is an easy way to assess your level of thyroid stimulating hormone.

4. House hold cleaners: using household cleaners once a week increases your risk of getting an asthma attack by 76 percent.

5. Drink Tea in the morning: According to International Journal of Cancer drinking hot tea can cut your risk of kidney cancer by 15 percent

6. Vitamin D: According to an Archives of Internal Medicine 400 IU of vitamin D a day reduces your risk of an early death by 7 percent.

7. Iron: women specially need to take in enough iron, because they lose lot of it during their menstruation period. Dried beans, spinach, enriched products, brewers yeast, and dried fruits are all good plant sources of iron.

8. Calcium and Vitamin D: dairy products provide calcium as do soymilk, rice milk, and orange juice. Certain green vegetables such as broccoli, kale, and Chinese cabbage as well as almonds, figs, and blackstrap molasses are also good sources of calcium. Sunlight enables us to make our own Vitamin D and cows milk, fortified soymilk, and rice milk have vitamin D.

9. Sodium: Recommended sodium intake is about 2000 mg/day. A typical fast-food meal with regular fries and a small shake gives you about 1500 milligrams of sodium.

10. Fiber: a daily intake of between 25 and 30 grams of soluble fiber each day has been shown to lower blood cholesterol levels. You can find this type of fiber in oatmeal, oat bran, lentils, legumes, and fruits such as apples, and strawberries.

11. Soy: Soy protein is found in soy beans and other products such as tofu, tempeh, and soy beverages. Consuming soy products may help to reduce elevated levels of LDL cholesterol.

12. Fish: eating fish improves cardiovascular health in a number of ways. All fish, but especially salmon, mackerel, herring, trout and sardines, contains omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce the stickiness of your blood. Fish may also prevent erratic heart rhythms, a common cause of sudden cardiac death. The recommendation for eating fish is two to three times per week.
